Microsoft is finally giving us what we’ve wanted: 1,000 private channels per team and channel limits increases to 5,000-members. But to get there, they are changing how the data is stored behind the scenes.
On June 5th, Retention, DLP, and eDiscovery for private channels will shift to a new group-based model. If your current policies are scoped specifically to individual private channels, they won’t automatically apply to the new model. You’ll need to re-apply them to the parent Microsoft 365 group, or your compliance coverage will stop working after the migration.
There is also a “soft-delete” clock ticking: Any private channels that are ownerless or have only guest members will be soft-deleted on June 5th.
Take action: We recommend running your admin reports this week to identify those ownerless channels and re-scope your Purview policies before the deadline.
If the thought of accidentally deleting active channels or losing legal hold coverage keeps you up at night, we can help your teams with pre-migration audits to ensure nothing gets lost in the shuffle.
