Teams will enforce Information Barriers inside external group chats from June 15

𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺𝘀 — 𝗮 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗺𝘀 𝗴𝗮𝗽 𝘆𝗼𝘂’𝘃𝗲 𝗳𝗹𝗮𝗴𝗴𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗲. 🛡️

From June 15, 2026, Microsoft Teams starts enforcing Information Barriers between users in the same tenant even when they’re together in an externally-initiated group chat, call, or meeting. Until now, two same-tenant users kept apart by an Information Barriers (IB) policy could still land in the same conversation if it was started from outside the organization — a blind spot for regulated firms.

The Compliance Shift: IB policies that separate groups — think advisory vs. brokerage, or clinical vs. billing — now hold no matter who started the chat or who else is in the room. Enforcement applies going forward as policies and memberships change; existing external conversations aren’t torn down on day one, so there’s no flag-day disruption.

Next Steps:

• Confirm your Information Barriers policies and segments are current — stale segments are about to start mattering more.
• Map which external group chats today include same-tenant users on opposite sides of a barrier.
• Brief compliance and helpdesk: some users will lose the ability to see or message a colleague in a shared external chat, by design.
