Teams voice enrollment is on by default — and a voice profile is biometric data

Saying yes to a new Teams productivity feature is easy. Saying yes to collecting employees’ biometric data is a different conversation — and that’s effectively what’s landing in tenants this summer, on by default.

Between June and July 2026, Microsoft is rolling out express voice enrollment in Microsoft Teams to commercial tenants (education tenants are excluded). Instead of a dedicated setup flow, users are prompted to enroll a voice profile simply by speaking during a meeting. That profile powers speaker recognition, voice isolation, in-room identification, better transcripts, and richer Microsoft 365 Copilot recaps. It’s enabled by default, and turning it off completely means disabling both the EnrollVoice and PassiveVoiceEnrollment settings in the Teams AI policy with PowerShell.

A voice profile is biometric data. Whether that’s fine, or something your privacy, legal, or works-council stakeholders need to weigh in on, depends on where you operate and what you’ve told your people. The feature isn’t the problem — it’s that “on by default” means the decision gets made for you unless someone makes it.

How the SimpleSharepoint team helps you get this done:
• Policy review — we check your current EnrollVoice and PassiveVoiceEnrollment settings and show you exactly who is being enrolled today.
• Decision and documentation — we work with you to land an opt-in or opt-out position that matches your privacy posture, and record it so legal and HR aren’t surprised later.
• Ongoing tuning — we monitor the Teams AI policy as Microsoft adds voice and face capabilities, so your stance keeps matching your obligations.

If you’re curious how other tenants are handling biometric enrollment defaults, we’re happy to compare notes. Chat with our team.
