SharePoint Now Shows You What Copilot Actually Cites

Most corporate teams scoping Copilot obsess over what the tool can access. Far fewer ask what it actually cites. Those are two very different questions. The second question is where you learn which files are really carrying your business answers.

Microsoft is answering this second question with the introduction of AI citations analytics. Rolling out through August 2026, this feature shows site owners how often Copilot and other AI agents reference their documents, news posts, and pages.

Where to Find the New Citation Metrics in SharePoint

Once the rollout reaches your tenant, these new metrics will appear in three distinct locations:

  • Site Usage ranking: The Popular Content section will rank documents, news posts, and pages by how often they are cited by Copilot or AI agents.
  • Page analytics: Every individual SharePoint page and news post will gain a Total Citations card.
  • File statistics: Individual file statistic panes will display a dedicated AI citations metric right next to traditional views.

This capability is enabled by default and requires no administrator action to turn on.

How This Inversion Improves Your Content Governance

This feature provides a quiet but highly useful inversion for intranet managers. Traditional access controls only tell you what Copilot could theoretically use. Meanwhile, AI citations analytics tells you what it is actively using in daily workflows.

This data reveals which of your pages are authoritative in practice. It also exposes which highly-viewed legacy pages the AI quietly ignores. For anyone governing an enterprise intranet, this signal is incredibly valuable for deciding what content to keep current and what to retire.
