Microsoft Planner just came into scope for Purview retention

A quiet gap in your retention coverage just closed: Microsoft Planner is finally in scope.

Starting mid-June 2026, Microsoft Purview Data Lifecycle Management supports retention and deletion policies for Microsoft Planner content. Compliance admins can retain or delete Planner tasks automatically based on each task’s creation or last-modified date, with policies scoped to user and group-backed plans. Nothing changes for users unless you configure a policy.

What’s Now Covered: plenty of real work lives in Planner — project tasks, deadlines, attachments, comments. Until now, most retention programs quietly didn’t cover any of it, even in orgs that assumed “everything in Microsoft 365” was governed. That’s the kind of gap that stays invisible right up until a regulator or a legal request asks where the Planner data went.

Next Steps:
• Check whether your current retention policies touch Planner at all (they probably don’t).
• Decide the retain-versus-delete window that fits your compliance obligations.
• Extend your retention schema to cover Planner, and confirm nothing important sits outside policy.

Closing this gap is a small policy change with outsized audit value.

For other M365 admins: is Planner already in your retention schema, or did it slip through? Worth comparing how we’re each scoping task and attachment retention before it becomes an audit question.
