What Is Copilot Web Grounding and How Has It Changed?

Microsoft 365 Copilot web grounding offers great convenience right up until it cites a source your compliance team never approved.

When Copilot answers a user prompt using information from the public web instead of internal tenant data, IT teams define that process as web grounding. Historically, system administrators held limited influence over which external websites the model could reference during response generation.

Microsoft 365 Copilot web grounding now includes Domain Exclusion, enabling administrators to block up to 1,000 domains. This control ensures Copilot answers remain compliant with organizational policies. Rolling out worldwide in mid-July 2026, Microsoft disabled the feature by default, but Search Admins or Global Admins can configure it anytime.
