Impact on Collaboration Workflows and Desktop Client Transition

Loop components in OneNote for the web will stop working in mid-September 2026.

Microsoft is removing the capability to insert and edit Loop components directly within the browser experience, three years after initially introducing the feature. Following this change, existing Loop components in OneNote for the web convert into hyperlinked URLs pointing to the underlying Loop page. Users can still access their content with an extra click, but inline editing and creation options will no longer function in web browsers.

Operational Scope and Client Support Differences

Understanding how this deprecation applies across client platforms is critical for end-user support:

  • Web app functionality: Browser users lose inline co-editing and cannot insert new components into web notebook pages.
  • Desktop app continuity: The full interactive experience continues to function normally inside the OneNote desktop app for Windows.
  • No administrative toggles: Administrators cannot delay, opt out of, or block this client-side retirement using tenant policies.

Action Plan for Internal Support and Helpdesks

To minimize confusion across web-reliant users and reduce support ticket volume, IT teams should take three practical steps:

  • Identify affected teams: Pinpoint departments and project groups that rely heavily on web-based notebook collaboration.
  • Issue proactive communications: Notify users before mid-September so the removal of the insert menu does not trigger unnecessary helpdesk tickets.
  • Promote desktop client adoption: Direct web-only users toward the native OneNote desktop application on Windows to maintain live inline editing.

How we help you navigate this update:

  • Usage Assessment: We help pinpoint which teams rely on web-based notebook collaboration so you can target user communications effectively.
  • Helpdesk Alignment: We update your support team’s documentation and provide user guidance before support tickets spike.
  • Client Migration Strategy: We assist in transitioning web-only users toward the native OneNote desktop app to preserve live inline co-editing.

Microsoft’s support documentation does not yet display a retirement notice for this feature. Preparing your support desk now ensures your team is ready when the web insertion interface disappears.
