Edge screen capture restrictions arrive for sensitivity-labeled PDFs starting this August.

Microsoft Edge will block screen capture on PDFs carrying a sensitivity label that denies copy permission. This restriction applies when users open files from OneDrive or SharePoint web viewers. Rolling out in August 2026, this change aligns Edge with Microsoft Purview Information Protection policies.

The Compliance Shift

This feature closes a significant security gap. Previously, a sensitivity label blocked copying and printing on a labeled PDF. However, a simple screenshot still exposed the sensitive content.

Edge is the first browser to enforce this restriction. Other browsers do not cover this control yet. Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and mobile viewers remain unsupported at rollout. Because of this, the protection is real but partial.

IT and security administrators should take three proactive steps before rollout:

  • Audit sensitivity labels: Confirm which sensitivity labels in your tenant deny copy permissions today.
  • Brief internal teams: Inform security and legal teams that restrictions currently apply only inside Edge.
  • Update user guidance: Update documentation so staff understand which browser enforces the restriction.
