Preview Feature Retirement and Workflows Migration to Side Pane

The COPILOT function in Excel stops working on September 14, 2026.

Microsoft retired the function before it reached general availability. Originally shipped in August 2025 to Beta Channel users with a Microsoft 365 Copilot license and Excel for the web users in the Frontier program, its general availability was slated for 2027. Microsoft’s support page now states that the company is not moving forward with the worksheet function. AI-assisted work will instead continue through the Copilot side pane without a formula dependency.

Operational Impact and Formula Risk

Retiring cell-level AI formulas presents specific considerations for enterprise file management:

  • Uncertain formula behavior: Existing formulas in saved workbooks leave open questions regarding fallbacks, making proactive cleanup necessary.
  • Shift to side pane AI: Interactive tasks like summarizing text and classifying data move entirely into the Copilot side pane.
  • Architecture dependencies: In-cell calculations require supported alternatives or restructuring to avoid broken logic when the function stops resolving.

  • Audit active workbooks: Search your Beta Channel and Frontier spreadsheets for any instances of =COPILOT() before September 14.
  • Rebuild load-bearing processes: Transition critical cell dependencies to the Copilot side pane or supported enterprise alternatives.
  • Notify power users: Communicate the interface consolidation to key staff before formulas stop calculating.
