Copilot Cowork billing is now the exact difference between keeping the feature or losing it entirely. Microsoft made Copilot Cowork generally available back in June. The platform runs on usage-based Copilot Credits, which are priced at roughly one cent per credit. However, the free Frontier grace period officially ended yesterday on July 1, 2026. Therefore, any tenant without active, usage-based billing configured in the Microsoft 365 admin center loses access to Cowork immediately.

What Breaks When the Credit Model Fails

The sudden platform shift means Cowork stops working for everyone who relied on it during the preview phase. Unfortunately, there is no helpful warning prompt displayed at the user’s desk. The feature simply goes dark. As a result, your internal IT help desk will likely field a massive wave of troubleshooting calls today.

Action Items to Restore or Secure Your Access

Unconfigured Copilot Cowork billing parameters will directly impact your active workflows. Therefore, tenant administrators must take three immediate technical steps to stabilize their environment:

  • Confirm Copilot Cowork billing settings: Verify that your consumption model is properly established under the Cost Management blade.
  • Set a strict credit spending cap: Implement budget thresholds so usage-based billing does not unexpectedly run away from your department.
  • Target your active user licenses: Explicitly decide which teams keep Cowork access. Then, brief those specific power users on the credit consumption model.

If you are worried that Copilot Cowork billing is unconfigured and the tool will quietly stop working for your power users, we can help. Our team can quickly verify your Copilot Credits configuration and set sensible spending caps before your workflows stall.
