Foundational vs Advanced Tiers, Attendee Limits, and Renewal Planning
Microsoft is updating how administrators manage corporate webinars and town halls in Microsoft Teams.
Access to Teams Events features now depends directly on the license assigned to the event organizer. Furthermore, Microsoft Teams Premium no longer grants event capabilities in the way it previously did. Microsoft now splits event capabilities into foundational and advanced licensing tiers based on the meeting host’s SKU.
Feature Breakdown by Licensing Tier
First, understanding feature availability across SKU levels helps IT teams assign host licenses accurately:
- Foundational tier: Business, Frontline, and eligible education licenses include core webinar and town hall capabilities.
- Advanced tier: Enterprise licenses, including Office 365 E1, E3, and E5, add custom emails, waitlists, manual registration approval, and event insights.
- Attendee limits: Events with chat, polls, Q&A, and registration cap out at 1,000 attendees on foundational tiers and 3,000 attendees on advanced tiers.
- Capacity packs: For large events exceeding 3,000 participants, administrators must assign Attendee Capacity Pack add-on licenses to organizers.
Impact on Teams Premium Subscriptions
Second, legacy Teams Premium subscriptions follow specific transition rules:
- New purchases: Teams Premium licenses purchased after April 2026 no longer provide event capabilities.
- Legacy terms: Subscriptions purchased before April 1, 2026, continue supporting events up to 100,000 attendees until the active contract term ends.
- Ongoing updates: Additionally, Microsoft notes that several advanced capabilities are still rolling out across enterprise tiers.
Action Plan for IT and Event Operations
To prevent disruption during upcoming webinars or corporate town halls, administrative teams should complete three steps:
- Audit event organizers: Map all active event hosts across your tenant to determine their assigned license tier.
- Review contract expiration dates: Compare Teams Premium end dates with your corporate event calendar before licenses expire.
- Right-size capacity add-ons: Evaluate audience sizes quarterly to procure required capacity packs well ahead of major broadcasts.
