Images are an important part of websites, documents, and basically everything. Being able to easily see exactly what something should look like, or being able to quickly read a chart, are very important. For these blog posts the images are crucial! They show you exactly what to do and what to expect. Without them it would be much more confusing to follow the instructions given. With images being as important as they are, SharePoint can be a bit quirky when it comes to them. In this blog, I hope to help you learn some tricks regarding images and SharePoint customization so that you can be more efficient and productive.

Images are vital to any portal but using them in SharePoint has many quirks that can be worked around:

  • Size them and name them carefully on your computer, never allow the browser to resize your image, unless you have planned for it carefully or have a responsive design on your site
  • Open the images library in Windows Explorer and save it as a favorites location so that you can work with it like a file share
  • SharePoint can add borders and even shadows via image styles
  • Images should have proper ALT and TITLE tags, as this aids with search

Image formats:

  • Use JPG format for images with shading and gradients (photos, elaborate logos, etc.)
  • Use PNG format for images with solid colors (logos, simple icons, etc.)
  • Use GIF for black and white images or short animations (text, animated icons, etc.)
  • Use SVG for vector based graphics (simple shapes, overlays, etc.)
  • Avoid formats that are very large or are mostly incompatible with modern browsers and platforms: TIFF, EPS, TARGA, BMP, RAW, CR2, NEF, CRF, SR2…

This is a (very) rough guideline for file sizes and dimensions for the most common image types on SharePoint and other websites:

  • Profile (MySites) Images – 144px x 72px
  • Promoted Links tiles – 150px x 150px
  • Company Logo (header image) – 180px x 64px
  • Banner images (top of page) – 1024px x 576px
  • Medium Landscape images – 350px x 260px
  • Medium Portrait images – 350px x 460px
  • Site Icons (in browser tab, left of site name, favicon.ico) – 16px × 16px

How to Insert an Image onto a Page

  • Start Internet Explorer and navigate to the page you want to edit. The page will open.
  • Click the Settings menu gear icon, and then the Edit Page option. The Format Text ribbon will appear.
  • Click the Insert tab. The Insert ribbon will appear.
  • Click the Picture button. The Picture menu will appear.
  • Click the From Computer button. The Upload Image dialog box will appear.
  • Click Browse. The Choose File to Upload dialog box will appear.
  • Select a file and click Open. The file and its file path will appear in the Choose a file field.
  • In the Destination Library field, select the Site Collection Images option.
  • Click OK. The Site Collection Images dialog box will appear.

  • Add any pertinent information and click Save. The Site Collection Images dialog box will close and the image will appear in the Page Content field at the insertion point.

  • Click the Position button’s menu control and select Right option in the menu’s Float section. The image will shift to the right side of the page with the text wrapping around it.
  • Click the Format Text tab, and then the Check In button. The Check In dialog box will appear.
  • Enter any comments you might have for this version of the page and click Continue. The page will be checked in and viewable to all users with the appropriate permission.
  • Click the Publish tab. The Publish ribbon will appear.
  • Click Publish. The page will be now viewable to all users.

The page is now updated with the inserted image.
